It’s geek time – The Alpha Centauri All Metal LED Watch
Japan has always led the way with completely impractical yet ultra-stylish watches. A mate and I used to ogle at of the remarkably complex timepieces on Tokyo Flash (a Japanese online store specialising in weird-ass watches). The problem back then was, all of them were priced in Yen, included international shipping fees, and ended up costing as much as a fucking Rolex. And let’s face it, a Rolex is probably going to stand the test of time (pardon the pun) better than a piece of disposable Jap-crap…
I was stoked to stumble across this Japanese-inspired watch today. It’s equally as space age, and equally as hard to read, as most of the watches in the Tokyo Flash range…. but at a fraction of the price. Problem solved.
It’s called the Alpha Centauri, it’s all metal with red LED lights, and you can buy it for just $35 Australian, and shipped locally, from GeekyGadgets.com.au.
Icon Watch – 8-bit pixel style watch
I came across this Australian online store called Via Alley the other day. Despite erring on the girly side here and there, Via Alley have some pretty tasty gadgets on offer, including hard-to-find cameras, unique pieces of art, sunnies, stationery, watches and toys for grown ups. Plus, Via Alley is an Aussie site, which gives it an extra gold star of approval. They’re based out of Surry Hills in Sydney.
One specific item of radness is this 8-bit computer gaming-inspired watch, manufactured in Japan, known as the Icon Watch.
Apparently it was one of the most popular sellers at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, so by the laws of popularity, your friends here in Australia should also dig it. From what I’ve seen, Via Alley are the only stockists, so you’ll probably be the only cool cat in the block sporting this timepiece. Plus it’s only $130, which ain’t half bad for something that you’ll have for years to come.
